Luther and Calvin's Catechism
and Heinrich Second Helvetic Confession
The Reformers both Luther and Calvin taught they were both catholics (as do I), yes, they identified themselves to the church of the historic catholic church, it's creeds and councils (catholic meaning universal, that's all it means, NOT Roman Catholic). The Apostles, Nicene and Athanasian creeds. The Roman Catholic church started to develop in the middle ages 1054 after the schism, so BEFORE it was quite good theologically.
MANY have no idea what Sola Scriptura is, it's that Scripture alone is the final authority, for faith and practice. That means there are other authorities such as councils, creeds etc.. Scripture is NOT the only authority.
The Reformers were Augustinian they believed that God predestines sinners for salvation or elects them as found in Acts 13:48, Ephesians 1:4-5. They also believed man's does not have the ability or will to choose Christ therefore no freedom of the will John 8:34-36, Ephesiasn 2:1-4.
Even some of them believed Mary to be Theotokos (meaning God bearer) Luther I believe called Mary mother of God (this was due to the Nestorian heresy).
Luther even believed in baptismal regeneration and the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist.
There are somethings the Reformers believed we may not like but we have to deal with it and face it. When reading Church history you will have to come to terms with some things.
If you want to read the Reformers writings here they are below.
